DESCRIPTION:Climate change and human displacement\n\nA crucial topic concerning migration is its many causes. In what ways is climate change and crisis factoring in human displacement? Who is expected to respond to the climate crisis? \nFrom the apocalyptical to the hopeful? Is it possible to unite the forces or making a unified position across disciplines to address the crisis? What could be a meaningful religious response? \n\n\n\nThis event is part of an ecumenical and international webinar series will foster critical perspectives on migration in Europe. The series facilitates an ongoing conversation on these issues among theologians and migration scholars\, refugees and migrants\, activists\, and church and civic leaders. The initiative has the potential to enhance the promotion of the human dignity\, the protection of migrants’ and refugees’ rights regardless of their origin. Dr. Joshtrom Isaac Kureethadam is Chair of Philosophy of Science and Director of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. He was the Coordinator of the Sector of “Ecology” at the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development from 2017-2023\, where he continues to serve\, while attending to numerous academic commitments. His publications include Creation in Crisis: Science\, Ethics and Theology (Orbis Books\, 2014)\, The Philosophical Roots of the Ecological Crisis (Cambridge Scholars\, 2017)\, The Ten Green Commandments of Laudato Si’(Liturgical Press\, 2019); Laudato Si’ Reader (ed.) (Libreria Editrice Vaticana\, 2021)\, Per Una Conversione Ecologica (Castelvecchi\, 2023). \nArne Johan Vetlesen \nArne Johan Vetlesen is professor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo. His research interests are tied to the conditions of moral – individually\, culturally and socially\, as well as topics related to freedom\, market and professional ethics. Lately he has focused on environmental philosophy\, particularly the question of the value of nature in light of the debate between the Anthropocene and biocentric perspectives. \nSome of his latest publications include Hva skal vi svare våre barn? (How will we answer our children?) (with Rasmus Willig\, 2018); Cosmologies of the Anthropocene: Panpsychism\, Animism\, and the Limits of Posthumanism (2019)\, Smerte i vår tid (Pain in our time) (2020)\, Etikk i klimakrisens tid (Ethics in a time of climate crisis) (with  Jan-Olav Henriksen\, 2022) and Animal Lives and Why they Matter (2023). \nAbout Gioacchino Campese\nGioacchino Campese\, is a member of the Scalabrinians\, a Roman Catholic religious order\, currently serving as professor of theology of human mobility at the Pontifical Urbaniana University\, Rome (Italy) and working with the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI). He is also president of the Agenzia Scalabriniana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (ASCS)\, an NGO that operates in the areas of integral welcoming\, intercultural engagement and development cooperation in Europe and Africa. He has studied theology in Manila (Philippines)\, Chicago (USA) and Rome\, where he earned a PhD in theology of mission. He has been ministering with migrants and refugees in Mexico\, USA and Italy. He has authored and edited several books and articles on the theology of migration and the pastoral care with migrants and refugees. \nAbout Cecilia Nahnfeldt\nCecilia Nahnfeldt is professor in practical theology at Åbo Academy University. Her research connects theology with gender studies. DESCRIPTION:Communicating Migration:\nMigrant Resistance\, Resilience\, and Activism \nMigrant experiences are complex. They are characterised by a number of transitions\, contradictions\, and simultaneities that are not necessarily observable from a single political or economic orientation. Studying the phenomenon of migration in its multiple dimensions can offer a glimpse at how migrant groups interact with state policies and citizenship codes that subject them to violence and exploitation. \nWhat does the experience of migration mean to those who have lived it? And what can new and digital media offer migrant people in regard to self-representation? \nTo answer this question\, the webinar hosts/features research from transnational scholars in the fields of human mobility\, communication\, media\, and rhetorical studies who employ diverse research methods to describe how migrants and migrant communities carve their spaces of belonging in a hyper-nationalist world through storytelling via both traditional and new media communication technologies.  \nFor migrants\, developing communication strategies is a vital practice of finding social connections\, navigating the pressures of assimilation\, and maintaining links to various cultures. After completing his studies in Philosophy and Theology with a Licentiate in Christian Anthropology\, he graduated in Psychology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and obtained a Doctorate in Pastoral Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. \nSkoda is Professor of Pastoral Theology and Human Mobility at the Pontifical Urbanian University; Executive Director of SIMI\, an institute specialising in interdisciplinary research and training on migration; Director for Europe and Africa of SIMN\, an organisation that supports\, promotes and coordinates the socio-pastoral action of the Scalabrinian Missionaries globally. \nTrygve Wylleris professor emeritus of systematic theology and science of diaconia at the Faculty of Theology\, University of Oslo. DESCRIPTION:  \n“Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay”\nPastoral care with migrants and refugees\nTraining course\n18-21 September 2023 (online and in presence)\nIn preparation for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees\, to be celebrated on September 24\, 2023\, we are pleased to announce the opening of registration for the training course “Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay” Pastoral care with migrants and refugees (September 18-21\, 2023\, 11:00 am-2:00 pm Rome time). \n\n\nOrganized by the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) and the International Union of Superiors General (UISG)\, and and promoted by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development\, the course is aimed at women religious who wish to learn more about the issues or want to be trained to serve migrants\, refugees and/or asylum seekers\, internally displaced persons\, victims of trafficking\, itinerants and their families. After completing his studies in Philosophy and Theology with a Licentiate in Christian Anthropology\, he graduated in Psychology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and obtained a Doctorate in Pastoral Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. Skoda is Professor of Pastoral Theology and Human Mobility at the Pontifical Urbanian University; Executive Director of SIMI\, an institute specialising in interdisciplinary research and training on migration; Director for Europe and Africa of SIMN\, an organisation that supports\, promotes and coordinates the socio-pastoral action of the Scalabrinian Missionaries globally. \nAbout Cecilia Nahnfeldt\nCecilia Nahnfeldt is professor in practical theology at Åbo Akademi University. Her research connects theology with gender studies. Nahnfelt has long experience of research related to theological perspectives on migration and social inclusion in churches and civil society with a focus on Sweden and the Nordic countries. \nAbout Oliviero Forti\nOliviero Forti\, a law graduate from La Sapienza University in Rome\, is currently head of the Migration Policies and International Protection Office of Caritas Italiana. He has been dealing with human mobility issues for over 20 years\, first as a researcher and consultant for several Italian universities\, then engaging in institutional and advocacy activities at national and international level. He has since written numerous articles and publications on the phenomenon of immigration and international protection. He worked at the European Commission for the establishment of the European Migration Network. More recently\, he promoted the ‘MigraMed’ network through the involvement of Caritas in Mediterranean countries committed to human mobility. He is currently involved in the implementation of humanitarian operations from Africa and the Middle East. \nAbout Davide Pignata\nDavide is a philosophy major and graduate student in civil and sustainable economics. Since October 2022\, he has been the contact person for ASCS’s Borders project\, which aims to expand ASCS’s presence at the hot borders of European migration routes. Alongside this project\, Davide is doing an internship with Tranform!europe\, with a focus on migration to the European continent. \nAbout Gioacchino Campese\nGioacchino Campese\, is a member of the Scalabrinians\, a Roman Catholic religious order\, currently serving as professor of theology of human mobility at the Pontifical Urbaniana University\, Rome (Italy) and working with the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI). He is also president of the Agenzia Scalabriniana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (ASCS)\, an NGO that operates in the areas of integral welcoming\, intercultural engagement and development cooperation in Europe and Africa. He has studied theology in Manila (Philippines)\, Chicago (USA) and Rome\, where he earned a PhD in theology of mission. He has been ministering with migrants and refugees in Mexico\, USA and Italy. He has authored and edited several books and articles on the theology of migration and the pastoral care with migrants and refugees. \nAbout the series organisers\nThe Migration\, Ethics and Theology webinar series is developed in a cooperation between the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) in Rome and scholars in the research project Nordhost – Migration and Hospitality in a Nordic context. The partners hosted an international conference in Rome in 2019\, published in the edited volume Contemporary Christian-Cultural Values (C. Nahnfeldt/K. Rønsdal\, ed.)  (Routledge 2021)\, and the volume Contested Hospitalities in the time of Migration (S. Bendixsen/T. Wyller\, ed).  The SIMI Institute publish ed in 2021:  ‘Migrants and Pilgrims as our Ancestors’ (1 Chr 29:15). Theology of Human Mobility in the 21st Century (E. Chaves Dias /A. Skoda/V. De Sanctis\, ed.) \nCurrently\, the partners behind the series are Kaia Rønsdal and Trygve Wyller\, University of Oslo – Faculty of Theology (Norway). DESCRIPTION:Introduzione\nIl SIMI collabora con il dipartimento di sociologia della Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano\, con la Fondazione Migrantes e con l’Agenzia Scalabriniana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo nell’organizzazione della Summer School “Migrazioni e giustizia globale” che si organizza ogni anno durante l’estate. \nSono state numerose\, in questi anni\, le iniziative formative dedicate al fenomeno epocale delle migrazioni internazionali. In questo quadro\, la Summer School “Mobilità umana e giustizia globale” vuole caratterizzarsi per una sorta di “riposizionamento” di prospettiva\, collocando l’analisi dei processi di mobilità umana all’interno di una riflessione più ampia\, che rinvia appunto alla questione della giustizia globale\, letta in tutte le sue implicazioni: economiche\, politiche\, sociali\, culturali ed etiche. \nAttraverso gli interventi di studiosi ed esperti\, la presentazione di ricerche\, iniziative e testimonianze\, la realizzazione di laboratori interattivi\, la scuola vuole offrire un’occasione di crescita culturale\, professionale e umana\, prendendo le distanze dagli argomenti usualmente strumentalizzati dal dibattito politico\, ma anche proponendo un “salto di qualità” rispetto alle letture semplicistiche che sovente si danno dei fenomeni migratori\, dei loro protagonisti e del loro governo. \nDestinatari\nLa Summer School è rivolta\, in particolare\, a studenti universitari e dottorandi; funzionari della pubblica amministrazione\, operatori sociali e professionisti che\, a vario titolo\, sono impegnati sul fronte delle migrazioni e della cooperazione allo sviluppo; responsabili della pastorale delle migrazioni\, del lavoro e della famiglia; insegnanti e formatori; ricercatori e studiosi; responsabili di associazioni e volontari; giornalisti e attori della comunicazione. \nCrediti\nLa partecipazione alla Summer School viene riconosciuta dalla Facoltà di Scienze politiche e sociali dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore con 3 CFU per attività a libera scelta dello studente. Il SIMI equipara la Summer School a un corso integrativo di 3 ECTS. \nAttestato\nAl termine della Summer School verrà rilasciato un attestato di frequenza. DESCRIPTION:Migrations are more than movements of people from one place to another; they are related to cultural\, social\, political and religious transformations of people and nations\, and to the continuous reshaping of communities.Therefore\, they represent a major challenge to humanity\, as well as an opportunity of reshaping it today. They raise questions of greatest relevance for the global agenda\, as they affect governments\, religions in general and the Catholic Church in particular\, global\, national\, regional\, and local communities\, families\, and countless individuals. \nTo tackle these challenges responsibly\, the local Churches from sending\, transit\, and receiving countries all over the world are called to promote theological reflections and studies on the phenomenon as well as enable and encourage con- crete pastoral actions.To this end\, a group of congregations guided by the International Union of Superiors General (UISG)\, the Union of Superiors General (USG)\, and the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) are convening a group of international biblical scholars and theologians and pastoral agents to present and debate about the status of their research\, and respond to the reality of current migration movements.This 3-day-long International Conference is an important occasion for a reflection open to action. \n\n\nMigrants and Pilgrims as Our Ancestors (1 Chr 29:15) \nIn the context of the consecration of the first temple\, according to the account of the biblical chronicler\, King David makes a prayer of thanksgiving and offering to God. In this prayer\, the King presents himself before God as one who recognizes the migration history of his ancestors in Egypt and in the desert\, his own identity\, and God’s love for migrants\, which he expresses: «We are migrants before you and pilgrims like all our ancestors!». Being a migrant\, in David’s perspective\, is not just the socio-political status of the chosen people\, but a fundamental part of its identity.Thus\, he refers to migration and pilgrimage as theological categories\, evoking God’s call\, «The land is mine; with me you are but aliens and tenants» (Lev 25:23). David’s prayer makes us reflect on the condition of human existence as a passage: no one has a fixed abode in the earth. DESCRIPTION:Il 24 marzo 2020 dalle ore 9.30 presso la Città dei Ragazzi si svolgerà̀ il Convegno “Percorsi di cittadinanza: dall’esclusione all’inclusione” in preparazione del Global Compact on Education\, voluto da Papa Francesco per promuovere un patto educativo globale da ratificare il 14 maggio 2020. In occasione dell’evento si rifletterà anche sulle migrazioni a partire dai 4 verbi di Papa Francesco (accogliere\, proteggere\, promuovere\, integrare)\, non solamente dal punto di vista dei migranti\, ma più in generale come concetti-guida per le nuove generazioni. Il convegno sarà preceduto dai saluti dei rappresentanti dei vari Dicasteri vaticani e da un videomessaggio del Papa per l’evento. DESCRIPTION:Il 24 marzo 2020 dalle ore 9.30 presso la Città dei Ragazzi si svolgerà̀ il Convegno “Percorsi di cittadinanza: dall’esclusione all’inclusione” in preparazione del Global Compact on Education\, voluto da Papa Francesco per promuovere un patto educativo globale da ratificare il 14 maggio 2020. In occasione dell’evento si rifletterà anche sulle migrazioni a partire dai 4 verbi di Papa Francesco (accogliere\, proteggere\, promuovere\, integrare)\, non solamente dal punto di vista dei migranti\, ma più in generale come concetti-guida per le nuove generazioni. Il convegno sarà preceduto dai saluti dei rappresentanti dei vari Dicasteri vaticani e da un videomessaggio del Papa per l’evento. Lo scorso settembre Papa Francesco invitava a “promuovere insieme e attivare\, attraverso un comune patto educativo\, quelle dinamiche che danno un senso alla storia e la trasformano in modo positivo” invitando tutti coloro che ricoprono ruoli di responsabilità̀ e hanno a cuore il futuro dei giovani a rinnovare “la passione per un’educazione più̀ aperta ed inclusiva\, capace di ascolto paziente\, dialogo costruttivo e mutua comprensione”. \nIl convegno è organizzato dal gruppo di lavoro che si sta occupando del rilancio della Città dei ragazzi: Congregazione per l’educazione cattolica\,  Sezione Migranti e Rifugiati del Dicastero per lo sviluppo umano integrale\, Opera Nazionale per le Città dei Ragazzi\, Percorsi di cittadinanza\, Caritas Roma\, Associazione Centro Astalli\, Comunità̀ di Sant’Egidio\, Fondazione Migrantes\, Migrantes Roma\, SIMI\, ASCS – Casa Scalabrini 634\, Suore Scalabriniane\, A chance in life. \n  \nProgramma: \n9.30 Saluti introduttivi del Dott. DESCRIPTION:Introduzione\nIl SIMI collabora con il dipartimento di sociologia della Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano\, con la Fondazione Migrantes e con l’Agenzia Scalabriniana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo nell’organizzazione della Summer School “Migrazioni e giustizia globale” che si organizza ogni anno durante l’estate. \nSono state numerose\, in questi anni\, le iniziative formative dedicate al fenomeno epocale delle migrazioni internazionali. In questo quadro\, la Summer School “Mobilità umana e giustizia globale” vuole caratterizzarsi per una sorta di “riposizionamento” di prospettiva\, collocando l’analisi dei processi di mobilità umana all’interno di una riflessione più ampia\, che rinvia appunto alla questione della giustizia globale\, letta in tutte le sue implicazioni: economiche\, politiche\, sociali\, culturali ed etiche. \nAttraverso gli interventi di studiosi ed esperti\, la presentazione di ricerche\, iniziative e testimonianze\, la realizzazione di laboratori interattivi\, la scuola vuole offrire un’occasione di crescita culturale\, professionale e umana\, prendendo le distanze dagli argomenti usualmente strumentalizzati dal dibattito politico\, ma anche proponendo un “salto di qualità” rispetto alle letture semplicistiche che sovente si danno dei fenomeni migratori\, dei loro protagonisti e del loro governo. \nDestinatari\nLa Summer School è rivolta\, in particolare\, a studenti universitari e dottorandi; funzionari della pubblica amministrazione\, operatori sociali e professionisti che\, a vario titolo\, sono impegnati sul fronte delle migrazioni e della cooperazione allo sviluppo; responsabili della pastorale delle migrazioni\, del lavoro e della famiglia; insegnanti e formatori; ricercatori e studiosi; responsabili di associazioni e volontari; giornalisti e attori della comunicazione. \nCrediti\nLa partecipazione alla Summer School viene riconosciuta dalla Facoltà di Scienze politiche e sociali dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore con 3 CFU per attività a libera scelta dello studente. Il SIMI equipara la Summer School a un corso integrativo di 3 ECTS. \nAttestato\nAl termine della Summer School verrà rilasciato un attestato di frequenza. La Scuola rientra nelle iniziative di formazione e aggiornamento dei docenti realizzate dalle università e automaticamente riconosciute dall’Amministrazione scolastica\, secondo la normativa vigente\, e dà luogo – per insegnanti di ogni ordine e grado – agli effetti giuridici ed economici della partecipazione alle iniziative di formazione.

SUMMARY:X Edizione della Summer School "Mobilità Umana e Giustizia Globale"
DESCRIPTION:Dal 22 al 25 luglio 2019 si è svolta a Shengjin (Albania) la X edizione della Summer School “Mobilità Umana e Giustizia Globale”\, promossa dall’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in collaborazione con lo Scalabrini International Migration Institute\, l’Agenzia Scalabriniana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo e la Fondazione Migrantes e Fondazione ISMU. \nLa Scuola quest’anno ha affrontato il tema della religione nei processi migratori\, gettando luce sul fenomeno della mobilità forzata generata dai conflitti e dalle persecuzioni su base religiosa\, ma anche sul ruolo che la religione e la spiritualità svolgono nella biografia dei migranti e delle loro famiglie\, agendo come fattore di resilienza\, di sostegno identitario e di cura del legame tra generazioni. \nSono state numerose\, in questi anni\, le iniziative formative dedicate al fenomeno epocale delle migrazioni internazionali. SUMMARY:Migrant and families in the vision of Pope Francis
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Scalabrini Fathers’ arrival in Cape Town\, SIHMA organized a study meeting for all priests in the archdiocese to discuss human mobility within the lense of Catholic ministry.  The event showcased two Italian speakers\, Fr. Francesco Pesce\, the Director of Centre for the Family in Treviso\, and Fr. Aldo Skoda\, CS\, Dean of Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) in Urbaniana Pontifical University in Rome.  Archbishop Stephen Brislin was also in attendance. \nFr. Francesco Pesce focused his discussion around his work with couples and families.  He explained the theological view of family must be more inclusive and diverse. Most families and marriages do not fit in the basic and generalized model that is often presented in the Catholic faith.  To adequately assist couples and families\, the complicated issues of each family must be acknowledged and addressed.  There must be room left for imperfection\, as no family is perfect. This concept is certainly applicable to priests who work with migrants.  Migrants are often separated from their families or have lost family members\, creating very complex familial situations. \nFr. Aldo Skoda\, CS discussed concepts related to the governance of migration\, as well as how the media has affected public perception of migrants. Global policies tend to focus on the concern of national security over fundamental human rights. The militarization of borders reflects this perception. The failure of policies to adequately address migration related issues increases fear and perceived danger.  Further\, the media influences public perception through negative stories and political campaigns related to migration.  There is this view of the “migration crisis”\, that these individuals are invading a particular country and cause societal problems.  Fr. Aldo concluded with the idea of a Christian anthropological vision\, a way of diminishing the uncertainty around those who are different. \nThe aim of the event was to educate priests on how to approach migrants in their parish or diocese. Attendees were encouraged to ask questions and share their views around migration and working with migrants. Conversation concerning the acceptance of migrants who are not Christian was sparked.  The overarching theme concluded the importance of Catholic ministry to include and integrate migrants in both the Christian community and society.

DESCRIPTION:Dal 1 al 3 aprile 2019 si è svolta a Roma la conferenza internazionale Contested Humanities: a Dialogue on Ecumenical Spaces of Hospitality in Europe. L’incontro\, organizzato dal SIMI in collaborazione con la Universitetet di Oslo (UiO) e il Norwegian Institute di Roma e ospitato dalla Pontificia Università Urbaniana\, ha riunito docenti\, ricercatori e religiosi esperti a vario titolo di mobilità umana.
