Alfredo and Martina Asta , John and Rosaria Le Coche and Francesco Fazzari and Maria Giovanna Tatangelo came from Canada to donate to SIMI three scholarships worth 60,000 euro . That is why on September 22, 2015, a simple ceremony was held at the SIMI. In such event a scroll was handed in recognition of the generosity of benefactors. SIMI continues to offer scholarships to deserving students from all parts of the world only thanks to the sensitivity of institutions and people such as those named above.\u00a0A special thanks to\u00a0Fr. Vincenzo Rosato, Attilio Lio and Nives Chiappetta for their continuos support to our institute.<\/p>\n SIMI, in the person of the president, attended the XVI National Meeting of the Pastoral Care of Human Mobility (PMH) organized by the Committee on Migrants and Itinerant People of the Mexican Episcopal Conference on 23-25 \u200b\u200bSeptember 2015 in Zacatecas, Mexico. The event was attended by over a hundred diocesan delegates of pastoral care of migrants and pastoral coordinators. Professor Baggio was requested to deliver a talk on \u201cFormaci\u00f3n Teol\u00f3gica \u2013 Pastoral de los Agentes de PMH\u201d.\u00a0In the different sessions of the meeting\u00a0\u00a0sessioni several scholars and experts of human mobility were called to present a contribution. Each of them evidended a particular aspect of\u00a0contemporary movements: internal and internatioanl migrants, retuness and deportees, seafares and turists. Few workshops aiming at defininf a common apporach to the migrant minsitry at the national level have been undertaken.<\/p>\n The fifth annual Bishop Joe Grech Memorial Colloquium on Ethics and Migration was held on 27 August 2015 at the Australian Catholic University\u2019s Fitzroy campus. The theme for this edition was \u201cMigration, ethics and the Catholic response in last 20 years.\u201d The event was chaired by Ms. Sandie Cornish, Province Director of Mission for the Society of the Sacred Heart in Australia and New Zealand, and counted with the participation of a large audience composed by bishops, professors, students and pastoral workers. The first speaker was Bishop Peter Comensoli, the Bishop of Broken Bay in NSW, followed by Professor Klaus Neumann, eminent German historian, the Honourable Michael Danby, the Federal member for Melbourne Ports, and Father Fabio Baggio, Director of SIMI. All remarks were echoed by Father Maurizio Petten\u00e0, director of the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office, in closing the evening and thanking the eminent and distinguished panel of speakers.<\/p>\n The 2015 edition of the Summer School took place in Castel Volturno (CE), at Venus Park Hotel, July 13 to 16. Under the direction of prof. Laura Zanfrini, the school has focused attention on the right not to emigrate, on the conditions that make migration a compulsive choice and the responsibility of all those actors that take advantage of migration for various reasons, failing in duty to create, in the countries of origin, adequate opportunities for living and working for younger generations. Professors Maruja MB Asis (Philippines), Edmond Agyeman (Ghana), Rafael Alarc\u00f3n (Mexico), Giovanni Giulio Valtolina (Italy) and Fabio Baggio (SIMI) have shown how the massive flow of arms and brains from countries with strong migratory pressure to those of the global North is produced, focusing on a few specific faces of forced displacement in contemporary society. In the final round table discussion P. Gabriele Bentoglio and Mons. Gian Carlo Perego illustrated the teaching that comes from the reflection of the Magisterium and the pastoral rich experience gained in the places of origin and destination of migration. The school was enriched by some testimonies of the protagonists, guided tours and interactive workshops directed by prof. Monica Martinelli.<\/p>\n From 22 to 25 June 2015 in Valencia (Spain) the summer school (Escuela de Verano) of the Master Internacional de Migraciones of the Universitat de Valencia was held. SIMI was one of the co-organizers of the summer school together with other Scalabrini center for migration studies and other EU universities, which have been constituting a consortium since 2006. The 2015 edition of the summer school, tiled \u201cTowards the Global Fracture. Migrations and Multiple Ethicizations\u201d, focused on one of the more frequent dynamics within migrants\u2019 integration process: ethicization In the different session Spanish professor and scholars proceeding from other European and Latin America countries delivered their lectures. Over 70 students attended the school. They were given the opportunity to contribute personally to the reflection though an ad hoc workshop.<\/p>\n From 8 to 10 June 2015 in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, the first \u201cInternational Symposium on Religion and Migration\u201d (The Symposium Internacional sobre Religi\u00e3o and Migra\u00e7\u00e3o) was held. The theme chosen for this first edition was \u201cHuman Mobility and Religious Identities (Mobilidade humana and Identidades religiosas). The symposium was held in the Monte Alegre campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of S\u00e3o Paulo and it was organized jointly by the Post-graduate Program in Sciences of Religion of the same university, SIMI and the Centro de Estudos Migratorios (CEM) of the Scalabrinian Missionaries. The various sessions have seen the alternation of international scholars and experts, including professors Gioacchino Campese and Fabio Baggio from SIMI. Over 200 people attended the two and a half days of the symposium, to which several thousands of listeners who followed the conferences via web radio (RadioMigrantes) must be added. This is the first edition of a series of symposia that will take place over the next years with different themes and insights.<\/p>\n On 15 May 2015 from 15.00 to 18.00 hrs. at the Aula 12 of the Universit\u00e0 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Piacenza, the Seminar titled, \u201cBonomelli and Scalabrini: Two Bishops whose Hearts a Diocese was not Enough to\u201d was held. The even was organized by the Fondazione Migrantes (CEI), Universit\u00e0 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) in Rome and Fondazione Iniziative e Studi sulla Multietnicit\u00e0 (ISMU) in Milano. The program was composed of two sessions. The first session, more from the historical perspective, was dedicated to the presentation of the contributions by prof. Matteo Sanfilippo (Bonomelli, Scalabrini and italian emigration), Mgrs. Gian Carlo Perego (The Opera of Bonomelli for emigrants) and prof. Giovanni Terragni (The inititives of Scalabrini catering to emigrants). The second session intended to highlight the sociological and pastoral relevance of the reflections proposed by the two Bishops of the second half of XIX century. Such contribution were presented respectively by Prof. Laura Zanfrini and Prof. Fabio Baggio.<\/p>\n On 11 May 2015 the second meeting of the group Studio SIMI \u2013 PUG, which has chosen as topic for the whole 2015 \u201cirregular migration\u201d was held in the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In this meeting prof . Fabio Baggio presented his contribution titled, \u201cIrregular migration, trafficking and smuggling. Mixed scenarios in the European Union and in Italy\u201d , through which he tried to trace the current landscape of unauthorized migrants in Europe and particularly in Italy, starting from collected and available official data. The meetings of the Study Group are structured as a writeshop and on this occasion the attending scholars expressed their comments and offered suggestions to the author of the contribution in order to fill important gaps and add more reflections in the final part.<\/p>\n The Director of SIMI, Fabio Baggio, was invited to deliver the course \u201cHistory and problems of migration\u201d within the Master Program in Intercultural and interfaith Mediation organized by the Academia of Human and Social Sciences (ASUS) in collaboration with the Salesian Pontifical University. The Master, which is constituted of lectures and distance learning, is structured in 1,500 hours, equal to 60 ECTS. The course entrusted to Prof. Baggio includes 4 hours of lectures, which were delivered on Saturday 9 May 2015 at the headquarters dell\u2019ASUS in Rome. This 2015 edition is attended by 21 students from different ethnic backgrounds and training.<\/p>\n Monday, 4 May 2015, Prof. Fabio Baggio, director of SIMI, was ivitato to deliver a day of conferences in the ongoing formation course of the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles, Scalabrinians. The course, organized in Piacenza normally during the month of May, this year gathered more than twenty religious operating in different countries of the world. Prof . Baggio was given the task of identifying the most relevant socio-pastoral challenges posed to the universal Church and the local Churches by the contemporary human mobility phenomenon and proposing some possible responses.<\/p>\n The director of SIMI, Fabio Baggio, was invited to participate in the Triennial General Assembly of the Scalabrini Lay Peopleof the Region Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, which brought together representatives of the various Scalabrinian lay groups operating in Europe and in Africa. The meeting was held in Piacenza on 1-3 May 2015 and focused on the topic \u201cNew Horizons for the Scalabrinian Family: the role of the laity.\u201d Prof. Fabio Baggio gave a lecture on \u201cLay Scalabrinians: history, identity and action\u201d in which he stressed the importance of recovering the past in order to interpret the present and the future of the Scalabrinian laity in a creative fidelity to the charism.<\/p>\n On 29 April 2015 at the consultation room of the Center for Migration Studies in Rome (CSER) the issue 197 of the scientific journal \u201cStudi Emigrazione,\u201d containing the proceedings of the 2014 edition of the Summer School \u201cHuman Mobility and global justice\u201d was officially launched. The event took the title of the aforementioned Summer School \u201cWords matter \u2026 Define, represent, communicate the world of migration.\u201d Prof. Laura Zanfrini, editor of the volume, Prof. Ren\u00e9 Manenti, Director of CSER, Prof. Giovanni Giulio Valtolina, head of family and religion ISMU Foundation, Prof. Gian Carlo Perego, director of the Fondazione Migrantes, and Prof. Fabio Baggio, president of SIMI were the main speakers. The Summer School, which reached its sixth edition in 2015, is promoted by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan in collaboration with SIMI, the Scalabrinian Agency for Development Cooperation (ASCS) and the Fondazione Migrantes.<\/p>\n SIMI has collaborated in the organization of the ongoing formation course offered by the Region of Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini in Brescia from 14 to 16 April 2015. The course gathered over 50 Scalabrinian missionaries in order to take vision of the actual situation of migration in Europe and Africa, investigate real roots, the asymmetries between the north and south that force to emigrate, as well as the dynamics of exploitation and violence underlying the world of human mobility. The contributions of the various sessions were delivered by Ren\u00e9 Manenti (Centro Studi Emigration Rome \u2013 CSER), Fabio Baggio, president of SIMI, and Aldo Skoda, Vice Dean of SIMI, who spoke respectively of updated data on migration in Europe and Africa, the pastoral challenges of the contemporary human mobility and the responses proposed by the local Churches and the Scalabrinians in the two continents. The course program entailed also workshops, group work and presentation of good practices.<\/p>\n The 12th volume of the series Quaderni SIMI has been published and it now available. On 28 November 2013, at the Newman Hall of the Pontifical Urban University, the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) held its traditional Academic Act. The 2013 edition of the act was titled, \u201cNot by Bread Alone \u2026 Human Mobility and Development Scenarios.\u201d The 2013 edition of the Academic Act of SIMI, in its first two sessions, wanted to summarize the reflections matured in several areas of science and theology to draw a conceptual framework, which would include also the latest developments. In the third session, the speakers tried to outline some hypotheses of the future in two continents particularly marked by human mobility: America and Europe. All contributions have been collected in this volume, edited by Fabio Baggio. The volume also includes an appendix literature on migration, development, ethics and justice.<\/p>\n SIMI was invited by the ISSR “Mater Ecclesiae” of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum) to give a series of lectures on the phenomenon of human mobility and the pastoral responses that the Catholic Church has set up in recent times as part of module on pastoral theory and practice entitled “Evangelizing”. In this context, on February 25, 2015, from 15:30 to 17:00 hrs., prof. Aldo Skoda and Fr. Corrado Caroli dictated a lecture on “The pastoral care of human mobility: challenges and opportunities”. On March 3, 2015, from 15.30 to 17.00 hrs., prof. Gioacchino Campese delivered a lecture on “The theology of human mobility: quaestionis status”. The cycle ended on March 4, 2015 , from 15:30 to 17:00 hrs., with a lecture on “The phenomenon of human mobility. A comprehensive look” delivered by prof . Fabio Baggio.<\/p>\n On 25 February 2015, the Director of SIMI, Fabio Baggio, participated in a seminar in Luanda, Angola, organized by the Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobiity in Africa (SIHMA) in collaboration with the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (SEPAMI) of the Conferencia Episcolal Angolana and the national Caritas. The seminar served to present the Portughues version of the book “Africanos on the Move.” It was attended by some sixty experts, pastoral workers and representatives of institutions. In his speech, Baggio, editor of the book, presented the purpose and methodology of the research that produced the reports collected in the book.<\/p>\n Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the operational headquarters of SIMI, Via Dandolo 58, Rome, the study group SIMI – PUG held the first meeting for the year 2015. This group was formed as a joint initiative of the SIMI and the Pontifical Gregorian University and it itnends to study certain relevant areas of the phenomenon of human mobility. The study group currently consists of four professors from SIMI and 4 professors from the Gregorian University. For this year the study groups would address the issue of irregular migration.<\/p>\n On 30 January 2015 at the headquarters of SIMI in via Dandolo 58, Rome, the first Council of Institute of the Academic Year 2014-2015 was held. Fr. Fabio Baggio (director), Fr. Aldo Skoda (vicedirector and amdinistrator), Sara Salvatori (secretary), Fr. Ren\u00e9 Manenti, Bro. Gioacchino Campese, Fr. Luigi Sabbarese, Fr. Giovanni Rizzi and Deacon Carlos Barbosa attended the meeting. The Council approved the financial report for 2014, the budget for 2015 and the program of the courses for the licentiate in 2015-2017. The same Council also approved the Ph.D. research program of Fr. Pierre Mirindi.<\/p>\n On 23 January 2015 the Commissione di Pastorale Sociale of the Catholic Parrish of Bisogne, province of Brescia, organized the first of three nights dedicated to the issues and problems of immigration in Italy. The first night was titled “Immigration beyond common places”. For such occasion the SIMI director was invited to deliver a conference on the causes, trends and main data concerning the immigration phenomenon in Italy. The audience gathered for the event actively participated in the open forum which was opened at the end of the conference, underlining how some “myths” succeeded in detouring the attention of the public opinion, hiding the opportunities that immigrants offer to the Church and society in Italy.<\/p>\n On 18 January 2015 at the Centro San Luca in Sora (FR) the Office of Migrantes of the Diocese of Sora Cassino Aquino Pontecorvo organized a Round Table Discussion on the main theme of the 101 World Migrant and Refugee Day : “Church without Borders, Mather of All”. The SIMI Director participated to the Round Table Discussion with a presentation titled, “The Theological Dimension of Christian Hospitality”. Mantonvani, opened the proceedings. The main speakers were Dr. G. Cipollone, professor of Church History and editor of the book \u201cThe challenge of migration: risks and opportunities,\u201d and Dr. L. Pandolfi, professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the PUU and UPS. Two interesting initiatives of intercultural pastoral care of youth were presented. Prof. G. Beltrami illustrated the publication \u201cCross Borders,\u201d a subsidy for the intercultural training of young people. Prof. C. Colombi then presented the JO.C.A. (J\u00f3venes with actitud), an intercultural cooperative. The event ended with a live performance of four songs taken from the training material of \u201cCross Borders\u201d by the Association Scalamusic.
