Mission
The Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) is an academic International Institute incorporated to the Urbaniana Pontifical University and it promotes:
- Researches and studies on human mobility with interdisciplinary approaches;
- The formation of professionals in the academic sector through special curricula of studies;
- The training of professionals and pastoral/social workers through the offer of specific courses and on-going formation programs, aiming at their qualification or re-qualifcation
Faithful to the intuition of the Founder of the Missionaries of St. Charles – Scalabrinians, the blessed John Baptist Scalabrini, and in line with the charisma of the Scalabrinian Congregation, the SIMI works to deepen our understanding of human mobility from the biblical and theological point of view, as well as its social, ethical and community building aspects. As a matter of fact, Bishop Scalabrini denounced the many injustices that migrants had to face, however, without overlooking the hand of God present in such a phenomenon, bringing the different sons and daughters of Abraham into one family into the kingdom of God.
As such, SIMI applies a multi-disciplinary approach to human mobility, whereby diverse perspectives are taken into consideration: theology as well as the many human sciences represent the grounds of the Institute that collaborates with organizations in the national and international arena. The multi-disciplinary perspective is passed on the students who are taught to look at migration from different angles and to create bridges between the different views.
Methodology
Concerning the benchmarks to evaluate the students attending the SIMI, the Institute refers to the European competence evaluation criteria based on knowledge and understanding, applying knowledge and understanding, making judgements, communication skills, learning skills. In all its formation programs SIMI:
- Promotes a comparative method and the dialogue among disciplines;
- Consider essential the dimensions of human promotion dimension, intercultural relations and interreligious dialogue;
- Cooperates with the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN), with other academic institutions and international centres of studies and researches on human mobility;
- Fosters the intercultural and interdisciplinary character of its programs, both in term of professors and students.
Target
SIMI is for all those people – professors, researchers and pastoral agents – who want to deepen their studies or update themselves on special aspects of human mobility, which represets one of the big challenges for the Church and society.
