Nomination of Fr Fabio Baggio

The Holy Father has called Fr. Fabio BAGGIO CS and Fr. Michael Czerny S.J. to assist him in the direction of the Section “Refugees and Migrants” with the title of Under-Secretaries. The Statutes of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development establish a Section which “specifically oversees matters regarding refugees and migrants” (Art. 1, § 4) and which is placed ad tempus under the guidance of the Holy Father. We offer to Fr. Fabio our special congratulations and best wishes for a fruitful ministry for the good of the Church in the service of migrants.

On 25 August 2016 at the premises of the Australian Catholic University (ACU)  the fifth edition of Bishop Joseph Grech Colloquium on Ethics and Migration was held. It is an event that has already become a tradition for the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office (ACMRO) of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The title of the 2016 Colloquium was Christian-Muslim Relations in a Persecuted Rregion and the Impact on Immigration, a hot theme in the global scenario of human mobility nowadays. Prof. Fabio Baggio presented a contribution entitled Conflict Driven Migration to Europe: When Humanistic Principles are at Stake.

Summer School in Lampedusa

On 18 - 21 July 2016 the 7th edition of the Summer School on Human Mobility and Global Justice titled, "A Sea of ​​Hope. Forced migrants on Europe's doorstep," was held in Lampedusa. Organized by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, in collaboration with the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI), the Migrantes Foundation and the Scalabrinian Agency for Development Cooperation (ASCS), the seventh edition of the Summer School offered interdisciplinary lessons, testimonies of support and service, workshops and guided tours. Death of Fr. Mario Santillo

Martedì 21 giugno 2016 ci ha lasciato improvvisamente, a soli 57 anni, P. Mario Santillo, professore del SIMI. Un infarto fulminante ha stroncato la sua vita nella sua residenza di Buenos Aires. P. Santillo, missionario scalabriniano, era un apprezzato sociologo esperto di mobilità umana e politiche migratorie in America Latina. Tra le ultime collaborazioni con il SIMI ricordiamo i corso "Polithce migratorie comparate" impartito nel secondo semestre e la moderazione generale nella Escuela de Verano che l'istituto organizza annualmente in collaborazion con la Universitat de Valencia. Il SIMI porge le più sentite condoglianze alla sua famiglia.
